Effective September 1, the University of Saskatchewan will no longer accept Visa cards for tuition payments as part of changes to payment options available to students. uSask will continue to accept MasterCard, as it, unlike Visa, allows universities to charge an administration fee. The university will charge a 1% administration fee to all tuition payments made with MasterCard, which will be accepted online only. In 2009-10, uSask paid about $900,000 to accept credit cards for tuition payment. The university's vice-president of finance and administration says the new administrative fee will cover about half of that expense moving forward, allowing uSask to direct those savings into projects designed to enhance the student experience.
